Jo Burton

Jo first learned to carve wood with experienced Wirral carver John White and then went on to train with internationally renowned woodcarver Michael Painter.

She has a love for the unique warmth and character of carved wood, and has a passion for bringing out its natural beauty. She has gained experience through completing a wide variety of traditional and contemporary woodcarvings and sculptures. Her inspiration comes from the natural world, emotions, and the world around her. She increasingly combines her ideas to produce unique pieces of contemporary sculpture.

Her sculptural works are hand carved using traditional techniques from a wide variety of sustainably sourced and repurposed woods such as lime, beech, yew and cherry. Works are finished with Danish oil and Beeswax to enhance the grain and bring out the depth of the natural colour of the wood. As such her work is both beautiful and ecologically sound.

This year she has been working as Artist in Residence at the University of Chester and has worked with some of the students in addition to producing a number of new ‘Seaweed Lady’ sculptures which have been exhibited at the Contemporary Art Space in Chester.

She has signs in local parks and gardens, and has sold her work through: The Barn in Heswall, The Lakeside Gallery in West Kirby, Oxton Art Fair, The Williamson Art Gallery, Tate Aisle Gallery, The Wirral Society of Arts, Wirral Open Studios, CASC in Chester and the Liverpool Art Fair.

She is passionate about sharing traditional woodcarving techniques and teaches woodcarving from her workshop in Heswall.
